The Devil Wants Your Mouth

There is a fundamental concept that the devil wants to keep hidden from people. He does not want us to know the power we possess in the earth to bind and loose things by our words. As a matter of fact, he wants us to give him control of our words so he can wreak havoc on us. The devil wants your mouth, plain and simple.

But why does he need our words? Why can’t he just speak his own words and make things happen? The answer lies in Genesis 1.

God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:26-27 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)

Beginning in Genesis 1:3, God began creating and making things happen. How? By the words of His mouth. In Genesis 1:26-27, God decided to make mankind to be like God and to give man specific authority over the earth. How would man exercise this authority? By his words. Our words, just like God’s, have power. The devil or any of the angels created by God were never given this authority. They were not made in the image and likeness of God. They have not been given the ability to use their own words to make things happen in the earth. That is why the devil wants mankind to be ignorant of this fact. He had to get Adam to hand over his authority over the earth and even today he needs man to give him his mouth to make his plans come to pass.

The tongue can bring death or life. Proverbs 18:21 (New Living Translation, NLT)

When we speak the words the devil wants us to speak- words of fear, hatred, division, selfishness, unforgiveness, jealousy, and so on, it give him the ability to loose his plans of death and destruction in the earth. When our words agree with the Word of God, we thwart the plans of the adversary. That’s why he works overtime trying to bring feelings of fear and other negative emotions to prompt us to speak words that agree with him.

We must be on constant guard over our thoughts and words. The best way to do this is to be in the Word daily. The more we expose ourselves to the Word of God, the more our thoughts and words automatically line up with it. That is the way we can prevent the devil from getting our mouths. The devil may want my mouth, but I have made a quality decision that he can’t have it. What about you?
