A Fall

Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matthew 21:42-44 (KJV)

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to himyou also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. I Peter 2:4-8 (New International Version, NIV)

Christ is the chief, or head, Cornerstone. This means we can fall on Him in repentance and surrender. As we do, we fall into His loving care to be built up and established on Him. Our lives are strong because we are built upon Him. He is strong and stable and He makes our lives stable. As a result, we grow up into a holy habitation for God. There is no firmer foundation than Christ.

On the other hand, we can reject Christ and stumble over Him. We do this by not believing Him or accepting who He says He is: God, Savior, Messiah. We can refuse to believe and be broken to pieces. The Stone will crush anyone that it falls upon- crushing them into a powder.

So, we can humble ourselves and let Christ break our pride, which causes us to fall on the Savior to be saved. Or we can continue to reject Jesus Christ and be judged and destroyed when He falls on us.

At this moment, God is extending mercy because He desires that we are all saved. But, time will run out and we will all will face the consequences of our decisions. A fall is coming, but the choice is ours in determining which fall it will be: a fall of salvation or a fall of destruction.

For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ Acts 4:11 (New Living Translation, NLT)
