Communion: The Overcoming Meal

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. I Corinthians 11:23-26 (KJV)

On the same night that Jesus was betrayed, He partook of the Passover meal, or the communion meal. It helped Him to deal with and overcome betrayal and the events that followed. He didn’t try to deal with such challenging issues on His own. Instead, He partook of His covenant rights and tapped into the strength of God.

As we face life’s battles, we can remember and rehearse our covenant rights through the covenant meal. It is the New Covenant, based on the broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ. We can claim and take part in all that Christ’s body and blood paid for us to have.

His body was broken for everything that tries to break us- broken health, broken relationships, broken hearts, broken callings and giftings, and so on. His shed blood provides for our salvation, forgiveness and cleansing from sin, wholeness, peace, protection, and deliverance. In communion, as we partake symbolically of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, we take possession of all of our covenant rights. Jesus suffered and died to give us those rights so that no matter what we face we can remind ourselves of the promises of God in His covenant. We can take communion and overcome anything we encounter- just as Jesus did.
