Instructions For Possessing The Land
God has instructed us to take the land, our promised land. How do we do this? Deuteronomy 6 gives us instruction about possessing the land. Today, we’ll go verse by verse through this informative chapter.
Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: Deuteronomy 6:1 (KJV)
We must have God’s Word, learn it, and do it. That is what empowers us to possess the land.
That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. Deuteronomy 6:2 (KJV)
When we fear and honor God, adhering to His Word, and teaching future generations to do the same, our lives are lengthened. In fearing God, we will not fear man or what man can do to us for we know that God is with us and is on our side.
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. Deuteronomy 6:3 (KJV)
Hear and observe the Word of God in order for things to go well with you. In so doing, we will increase mightily in the land. Milk and honey speaks of provision and bounty. Our lives will be filled with everything we need. We will lack for nothing.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (KJV)
God is three persons, yet one God. We are to love Him with all that is in us.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (KJV)
We must keep God’s Word in our hearts, teaching them to our families. We are to be thinking on and speaking the Word everywhere we go and in everything we do.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:8-9 (KJV)
When we find ways to keep God’s Word visible before us, our eyes and hearts will be focused on God. We will be constantly looking at God and His promises to help us possess the land. Declare God to others as you put Him first.
And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Deuteronomy 6:10-11 (KJV)
God will bring you into the land, giving you cities and houses, furnished, full, and free. You will receive wells, vineyards, olive trees, and all types of provision so you can eat and be satisfied.
Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Deuteronomy 6:12 (KJV)
When God blesses us, we must not forget Him. We must always remember that God is our Deliverer and Provider.
Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; Deuteronomy 6:13-14 (KJV)
Fear means to reverence and respect God. We must have a healthy fear of God and serve Him only. God will not stand for us to worship anyone or anything but Him. His name is the name above all names.
(For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 6:15 (KJV)
Don’t tick God off by looking to other gods. We win over sin by keeping God first.
Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Deuteronomy 6:16 (KJV)
We tempt God by sinning and trying to get by with it- by not obeying God (I Corinthians 10:9). We tempt God by not believing that He can provide (Exodus 17:2,7). We tempt God by murmuring and complaining against Him and the leaders He has placed over us. This opens the door for the bite of the serpent, the devil, in our lives (Numbers 21:1-6).
Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers. To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken. Deuteronomy 6:17-19 (KJV)
Keep God’s Word. Do right in His sight. When we follow God and His will for our lives, walking in His Word, things will go well for us. We will be empowered to take the land and evict the enemy.
And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you? Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes: Deuteronomy 6:20-22 (KJV)
As we do these things, it produces a good testimony to share with our children. We can tell how God delivered us and brought us out of bondage into freedom by great signs and wonders, which still continue today.
And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. Deuteronomy 6:23 (KJV)
He brought us out to bring us in. He brings us out of every bondage, every curse, everything that is harmful and wrong. He brings us into redemption, freedom, and blessing- that’s the promised land!
And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. Deuteronomy 6:24 (KJV)
God gave us His Word to our good always. God is good and wants to do us good all the time.As we obey Him, we will live out our days in His protection and provision.
And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us. Deuteronomy 6:25 (KJV)
As we believe God, it puts us in right standing with Him. Obeying Him and His Word opens doors to blessing, provision, and abundance. Righteousness empowers us to be right, do right, live right, and see right results. We are acquitted of all wrongs and sin, and we are enabled to go in and possess the land.
