Being Stable

And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: Matthew 12:25 (KJV)

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 1:6-8 (KJV)

This tells us that the root to stability is the mind. Double minded in the Greek means to be a man of two minds. Wavereth means to be divided in our mind, to hesitate, to doubt, to waver. We must have a made-up mind for God. This is a necessity for us to seek God, serve God, and trust God- no matter what. To not waver, we must be of one mind. A two-minded person can be defeated. A single-minded man cannot be shaken. He can’t be moved from his position in God. He rests on God’s Word, fully trusting in it. And when we are relying on and trusting in God and His Word, we are stable in all of our ways.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2 (KJV)

The more we renew our minds to the Word of God, the more single-minded we become. And the more single-minded we get, the more stable we are.

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Ephesians 4:13-14 (KJV)

Stability is a sign of maturity in the Lord. The mature Christian has been consistently renewing their mind, and is not carried about, tossed to and fro. Instead, he or she is anchored in the truth. Therefore, when emotions rage, they are stable because they are anchored in the Word regardless of what others do.

The Bible is full of word pictures. In this instance, instability is compared to a wave that is thrown about in the sea. Mature Christians are focused on God and His Word; securely anchored. They are not easily tossed about. They are immovable and have a made-up mind, single-minded in their resolve. They are in it for the long haul. They run their race and finish their course, receiving their reward from the Lord.
