The Truth of the Trinity
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. I John 5:7
This verse speaks of the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost (Spirit). This clearly tells us of the three Persons of the Trinity who make up God. God is a triune God- He is three-in-one. You can say that He is God in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are three individuals, yet one. The triune nature of God speaks of His perfect unity. A good way to see the Trinity is how They were involved in the water baptism of Jesus.
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16-17 (KJV)
Jesus is baptized. Holy Spirit descends on Him. The Father declares that Jesus is His Son in Whom He is well-pleased.
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1: 34-35 (KJV)
Another picture of the Trinity is seen in the birth of Jesus. Jesus came to earth by the Holy Spirit. God made a promise. Jesus came to Earth. Holy Spirit is the One who brought Him.
One God exists in three Persons in eternity past, present, and future. God has always been triune and always will be.
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 15:26 (KJV)
This is another clear reference to the Trinity. Jesus, the Son, is speaking. He refers to the Father and the Holy Spirit, Who is also called the Spirit of Truth. People who refute the Trinity are rejecting Scripture.
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. Acts 17:29 (KJV)
This speaks of the Godhead, which in Greek is the word theos, or God. This points to the Three-In-One God- the Trinity, the one true God made of three Persons.
In searching the Scriptures, we learn more about the Trinity and our understanding will grow. Of course, in this life we are limited in our understanding. However, the Trinity s a sciptural truth. It simply takes faith to believe that the Lord God is One God and is Three-In-One.
