One Thing
According to communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf, we were not made to multi-task, but we function much better when we do one thing at a time; we think deeper, grow more, and perform at a higher level. Most of us try to do more than one thing at a time and multi-tasking has been applauded by the business world, but I want to share what the Bible and Dr. Leaf tell us about the value of “one thing.”
Both the Bible and Dr. Leaf tell us that the best way to do things is one thing at a time. Our brains are wired that way. When we focus on one thing, we think, learn, and perform better. According to the Word, our one desire, our one focus, is to be the Lord, and then all other desires will come under His Lordship. As we concentrate on Him, it takes care of all other things. And His guidance and leadership will affect how we do everything else. And it brings enjoyment and satisfaction to what we do.
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4 (KJV) emphasis mine
David understood the value of one thing: the Lord. All we desire and need is found in Him. It is the key to anything else we might do.
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:42 (KJV) emphasis mine
Jesus pointed out that one thing is needful, and as we desire that one thing, we find all we need in Him. This brings wholeness to us, spirit, soul and body. As we experience Jesus, all needs are met.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV) emphasis mine
As we focus on God, we can press into what He has for us. We can maintain a single focus spirit, soul, and body, involving the whole man. As we keep our spirits leaning toward the Lord, our thoughts single-minded, and our bodies pressing forward, we will receive more of Jesus, that One Thing we desire and love. As we do, He fills us to overflowing and we are energized to keep moving forward and stay on track.
No more multi-tasking and trying to look everywhere for what we need. All we need is in one place: Jesus!
One thing we desire…
One thing is needful…
One thing we do…
Jesus is the one thing, the main thing, the only thing we need.
