Increasing the Anointing
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I John 2:20 (KJV)
The word unction is the Greek word charisma, which refers to anointing. In other words, we have an anointing, an empowering, an ability, from the Holy Spirit. According to Strong’s Concordance, unction means an endowment of the Holy Spirit, or an anointing. This anointing renders a person holy and separated to God. The Holy Spirit’s anointing is the means of enabling believers to possess a knowledge of the truth. The anointing within us is for personal maturity. The anointing upon us is for public ministry.
The Holy Spirit brings the anointing, but how do we increase the anointing in us (I John 2:20) and upon us (Luke 4:18)? We have to go from the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word. In other words, we must mature in the things of God by not simply surface-reading the Bible, but by digging in and going deep in the truth of God’s Word. We must study it, examine it, and meditate upon it. The Holy Spirit will give illumination and revelation as we spend time studying the Bible. The deeper our knowledge of the Word, the greater the anointing we can gain. The deeper revelation of God’s Word matures us and prepares us to handle more anointing. It teaches us how to operate in the anointing.
The more we mature in God’s Word, feasting on the meat rather than sipping on the milk, the more the anointing will increase. We will receive no more anointing than our maturity level can handle. Our Word level dictates the level of anointing we operate in.
