Hope is a Sure Thing
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Hebrews 6:19 (KJV)
If you read this verse in context, it speaks of God’s two unchangeable things: His Promise and His oath. Let’s look at it in the Amplified Classic.
This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]. [Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it—a hope] that reaches farther and enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil, Hebrews 6:18-19 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)
God’s promise is our hope, our favorable and confident expectation and assurance that what God promises, He will do. Hope is the happy anticipation of good.
Hope is our anchor. In the same way that a ship can stay put in a storm because of the anchor and when the storm passes, the ship remains, so hope does the same for us. Hope anchors our souls in storms, so our souls remain stable and not tossed about with every wave. Hope keeps our thinking right, helps us to choose right, and causes us to feel right, no matter what is going on around us. The Greater One is in us- greater than the storm around us. When things are hectic outside, we can remain calm inside.
Hope gives us a surety that everything will be all right because we have God, His promise, and His oath (His written Word) on it. Therefore, we remain steadfast- acting the same at all times in all circumstances- until we see the manifestation of the promise.
