Using Power Properly

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 (KJV)

When the Holy Ghost comes upon us, we are clothed with supernatural divine ability to do right and treat people right- in other words, to be good and do good.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38 (KJV)

God gives us power to do good for people, not evil; to help and not to harm.

Throughout history, many have used their positions of power to hurt people, to hinder them, and to actually do away with people. Of course, this brings names to mind such as Hitler and other dictators. We could also think of people in other areas of society who used their influence and power to do things that were wicked and that promoted themselves at the expense of others. Hollywood, Professional Sports, Politics, and even the church have had their share of self-seeking people who have abused their power.

However, there have also been those who have used their power unselfishly to advance God’s kingdom on earth, making people’s lives better and making the earth a better place. Jesus used His power from God to help, heal, and bless others- to do them good. This is the example we are to follow. Like Jesus, let’s make the right use of the power we’ve been given by God to serve and not be selfish. When our hearts are right and full of the love of God, our motives will be pure, and we’ll use our power correctly. Let’s use our power to give and not to take. When we act to benefit others, it is the right use of power.
