Turn your Eyes
There’s an old hymn that says, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.” How do we do this?
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. II Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. Numbers 21:9 (KJV)
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: John 3:14 (KJV)
Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…. Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)
The Bible says looking unto Jesus, but how do we look unto Jesus? How do we really turn our eyes upon Jesus? The answer is so simple, it may surprise you. We see Jesus every time we look into Scripture and the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see Him, the Living Word, in His written Word.
Jesus is the Word made flesh. We can see Him in the Bible- how He responded to people and life situations, We see Him loving, teaching, and healing people. When we see the Word, we see Jesus, so turning our eyes upon the Word of God is the same as turning our eyes upon the Son of God.
When we’re born again, the veil is taken away. When we look into the Word and the Holy Spirit shows us a new revelation of who God is in His character, attributes, and works, we are turning our eyes upon Jesus. As we look to the Christ, the cross, and revelation, we see Him as Savior, Healer, Provider, and Friend. Through the names of God told in Scripture, we see more clearly who God is. He is Elohim: Creator. He is El Shaddai: the almighty, all-sufficient God. He is Jehovah Jireh: Provider. We see Him mentioned as Jehovah, Yahweh, Lord, I Am- meaning that all that God is, He will be to us as we turn our eyes upon Jesus.
We also turn our eyes upon Jesus as we worship Him. As we meditate and reflect on the Word and the Lord, we turn our eyes upon Jesus. We see Jesus line upon line, breakthrough upon breakthrough, provision upon provision. The more we turn our eyes, the more we see who God is. Turning our eyes is a choice we must each make. He won’t force us to turn our eyes His way. We must decide that we would rather turn our eyes upon Jesus than upon anything else in this world. As we look unto Jesus, we’ll find He is all we need. As we turn our eyes and look upon Him, He fills us to overflowing.
